California Opioid Use Disorder and Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion Data Dashboard (CA OUD and MAT Expansion Data Dashboard)

About the Dashboard:

The California Opioid Use Disorder and Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion Data Dashboard (CA OUD and MAT Expansion Data Dashboard), is a resource developed by Health Management Associates (HMA), with funding from SAMHSA’s State Opioid Response (SOR) grants, administered by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). In California, the SOR grants are collectively known as the California MAT Expansion Project.

Funding for the California MAT Expansion Project supports approximately 30 initiatives, with the goals of increasing access to MAT, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid overdose deaths through prevention, treatment and recovery services. The California Opioid Use Disorder and Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion Data Dashboard (CA OUD and MAT Expansion Data Dashboard) was developed as a component of HMA’s California MAT Expansion Project work.
The Data Dashboard is intended to be a tool for participants in MAT Expansion projects, policy makers, providers, elected officials, funders, opioid coalitions, and any other citizen interested in data related to opioid use, outcomes, and systems of support. Users can explore both individual and comparative indicators at the county and state levels to better understand the status of the opioid epidemic and SOR grant-funded projects and resources that are in place to address it. The CA OUD and MAT Expansion Data Dashboard incudes data elements, trends, rates, and counts for many opioid use disorder (OUD) and substance use disorder (SUD) indicators from all 58 counties within California.

User Guide:

Welcome to the California Opioid Use Disorder and Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion Data Dashboard!

This CA OUD and MAT Expansion Data Dashboard was created using aggregated third-party data from ten data sources between 2010-2018 (click here to view our Data Sources). Data Dashboard users can view indicators individually, compare indicators against each other, and state trends. The Data Dashboard has six unique boards each with distinct functions, described below. Each board has an interactive map of California and drop-down menu of data elements. Depending on the board’s unique features and data presented, a dashboard may include filters, trend maps, and data tables.

  1. Statewide Trends: Users can select from a variety of indicators using the drop-down menu at the top of this board. When an indicator is selected, the data in the interactive map of California will update to display data by county. Users can hover over or click on a county to view additional demographic data. Users can also filter data displayed on the interactive map by county population and median age of county residents using the filters at the bottom of the board. Importantly, this board includes a ‘Download All Data’ feature to download all the data elements from each page of the data dashboard.
  2. Demographics: Users can view county-specific data and trends on this board. Users can select an indicator of interest using the drop-down menu at the top of this board, and view by county by selecting the county of interest from the second drop-down menu. The table of data on the right side of the board labeled “Detailed Utilization by County” will update according to the indicator and county selected from the drop downs. The graphs on the left side of the board will also update based on drop down selections.
  3. Access: Users can view available resources and programs by county or statewide. Users can select an SOR funded program from the drop downs on the left-center of the board, and/or can select other resources from the table on the right, titled “Program County from Map” by clicking on the name of the resource. The interactive map will update based on selections. If there is an opioid coalition in a county, contact information will appear in the two tables on the bottom right of the board.
  4. Interventions: Users can view buprenorphine provider capacity to prescribe buprenorphine per 100K residents by county. Users can hover over a county to see additional county-specific details related to buprenorphine prescribing capacity as well as other OUD and SUD trend information.
  5. Disease Burden: Users can view various indicators related to disease burden by county, as well as programs intended to mitigate disease burden available by county. Users can select an indicator of interest by using the drop-down menu in the top right corner of the board, and the table below will update.
  6. Rate Trends: This dashboard allows users to view OUD and SUD trend information in one or more counties, as compared to state-wide trends. State-wide rates are displayed as solid color in background.
